What are Dado Rails?

Dado rails are a type of moulding which is added horizontally to walls, traditionally at a height of 24 inches from the floor. More recently however the trend is towards them being placed 36 inches up the wall (just above the dado part of a wall).

As well as being a fantastic decorative feature for walls, adding that all important character to a room, dado rails are sturdy and very useful for protecting walls from furniture damage. Originally that was their purpose, to prevent chairs or any other furniture from causing damage to wall finishes when they were leaned against them.

When choosing a dado rail it’s important that it goes with the rest of the room, in terms of design and the size of the mouldings used.

What is the difference between dado and picture rail?

Dado rails are interior wall mouldings that add decoration to your walls whereas picture rails offer the option to hand decorations around your home, whilst providing additional decoration themselves.
